Since the nodes are shifting from Taurus-Scorpio to Aries-Libra, it just so happens that this Eclipse Season held the only two signs ruled by the planet Mars - Aries AND Scorpio. When thinking about this energy between signs that form the quincux angle to each other though co-ruled by the same planet, I wanted to find the connective tissue because I don’t often believe in Astrological coincidences. I’d argue that that the Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio along with the Solar Eclipse in Aries is here to help us understand the Desire Equation.

Back in 1995, when the Nodes were also on the Taurus-Scorpio axis, sexologist Dr. Jack Morin put forward the Desire equation in his work, “The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Passion and Fulfillment”. Dr. Morin argues that “Desire = Attraction + Obstacle”. When thinking about Aries I see it as the ruler of Attraction and Obstacle ruled by Scorpio. Scorpio normalizes and even celebrates the appropriate level of obstacle and friction in relationships and anyone who studies sexuality can tell you that friction is the lighter fluid for the flame of attraction. So Mars ruled Desire = Aries made Attraction plus Scorpio ruled Friction. The Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio is the last Scorpio Eclipse we’ll have for the next decade. Lunar Eclipses are high octane, super charged Full Moons and so they complete what needs to be completed. Does that mean “Obstacle” needs to be completed? Absolutely not. What needs to be completed is our resistance to “Obstacle”. I understand we live in a time of unprecedented danger and risk. So the understandable impulse would be to make our lives as safe, risk-free, and comfortable as possible. We need security to individually and relationally flourish. Especially our romantic and intimate relationships where the stakes are so high. Except if the Desire equation is true, the more we flatten obstacles, the more we distance ourselves from the energy of desire. We forget how to own our wanting. We stop wanting to want because we are more preoccupied with our needs. Needs and wants are both essential but they’re different. And what I’m starting to understand is that, the more we remove obstacles from our life, then the collateral damage is; passion, enthusiasm, yearning, longing, eroticism, and aliveness. What I hope the Lunar Eclipse inspires you to surrender is the entitlement you have for Desire without Obstacle. You can’t separate them. Just like you can’t experience pleasure without pain, love without heartbreak, joy without anguish, and life without death. That’s the Scorpio truth. So who do you want to be, what do you want to do, and what do you want to have in the context of “obstacle”? Mine the strengths of your Astrology for context clues, inspiration, and guidance.

Since this Lunar Eclipse is opposite Mercury and Uranus in safety seeking Taurus, think of the ways that you can live into your values to safely engage with obstacle and the unknown. Let the opposition to Taurus inspire you to stay grounded and resourceful in these energies so you can experience your needs AND wants, attraction AND obstacle, pleasure AND pain with strength and clarity of purpose.
