Cancer Season flows in with a soft, incubating hug. The energy feels a bit different than the last 4 weeks, as we venture into a new Cardinal sign. Things begin to ease and our desire to pull inward is only heightened as we seek emotional safety. Cancer is lunar by rulership and by nature. It, like the Moon, goes through phases, ebbing and flowing in and out of time, space, and feelings. Cancer is nurturing, yes, but it would be a disservice to not also mention its creative and youthful sensibility. In order to learn to nurture, we must first learn to nurture our inner child. Through Cancer Season we are gifted the opportunity to tune into what we desire and hope for most, and to satisfy the hopes of the child within.
 


CANCER MYTHOLOGY

SNIPPETS FROM ORIGINS OF THE ZODIAC

While modern astrology is saturated with references to Greek mythological figures, the zodiacal sign of Cancer is a case study in how myths travel and become absorbed by different cultures over time.

The Greeks linked Cancer to Carcinos, a giant crab sent by Hera to distract Heracles during the second of his twelve labors: his fight with the deadly many-headed Hydra. Carcinos played more of a secondary role in this myth. However, the constellation of Cancer had long been known as the crab by the Babylonians, the Mesopotamian civilization pre-dating the Greeks by more than a thousand years. The ancient Greeks wanted to preserve this imagery in their system and needed to create an excuse for its inclusion.

THINGS TO FOCUS ON

THIS CANCER SEASON

While the Sun travels through loving and nourishing Cancer, we turn our attention to the themes of Home and Family. The craving for ourselves to go within our inner sanctums is undeterred. We welcome the vast ocean that is our softness and our emotions, as we envelop ourselves in the true nature of this Watery Archetype.


Below are ways to work with Cancer Season:


1. LUNAR AWARENESS
Tracking the Moon is easy with the Moon Calendar, Digital Calendar, or Planner. Take five minutes every day and journal/reflect on the sign or phase that the Moon happens to be in. Then, write or take note of how you feel. Learn to attune yourself to the natural rhythms.


2. KITCHEN WITCHERY
 If you have space, connect with what nourishes your body: food, herbs, water, and otherwise. Spend time preparing and nurturing a meal from start to finish. Infuse each step or ingredient with an intention or desire. Consume the meal or serve it to others with the idea that the intention will come to fruition.


3. MENDING MONDAYS
Mondays are the day of the Moon, which rules Cancer. Every Monday during Cancer Season, engage in an activity that you find to be restorative. Focus on your well-being and ways in which you can mend your body, mind, heart, and soul.


4. DOMESTIC BLISS
Make your home or safe space a priority this season! Focus on beautifying your home or engaging in domestic activities that make your space feel more relaxing. Deepen your relationship with your sanctuary. Try burning candles with notes of jasmine or bring fresh flowers into the home!


With softness, I find my strength. My vulnerability is less a weakness and more a facet of myself that deserves to be witnessed and seen. The ocean within me calms as I restore my vessel and nurture it in love, rest, and family (given or chosen). My safety is claimed, and I am gifted unending bliss in that safety.
