Destiny doesn’t determine your identity. Your decisions determine your identity. The annual New Moon in Virgo inspires the zodiac to examine the choices we make in the habits we commit to. So that we might come to understand how our decided habits initiate the momentum which creates our identity. Last Virgo Season, I read James Clear’s Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones and it revolutionized the way I think of “Virgo”. Reason being, Virgo is often pointing the way to the simple, sometimes easy, and practical steps we can all take that improve the quality of our life.
From dedicating time and space that helps us listen to our emotional and physical body through routines and rituals to simply remembering to breathe with intention, the underrated wisdom of “Virgo” is in its simplicity. When it comes to improving our life, I think we often anticipate that the complexity of the solution absolutely must match the complexity of the problem. Sometimes that’s true. And sometimes it isn’t. The wisdom of all the earth signs is that life is complicated but truth is simple. Virgo’s wisdom, as the only mutable-earth sign, and so the one that helps us make transitions, reminds us that their solutions and approaches aren’t difficult but they’re different. What’s difficult is getting over our resistance to doing things differently. Transitions are difficult because they invoke a wide range of full-contact emotions; grief, anxiety, fear, excitement, ambiguity, etc. So “Virgo” - said simply - is the simple, transitional space that helps us approach life differently. With this idea in mind, consider how the New Moon in Virgo wants your intentions on how to approach routine and ritual more habitually so that you can turn towards transition more gracefully.
The work of Day Schildrect also really helped me frame “Virgo” as the sign that helps us transition through habitual routines and rituals in this quote of his, “Rituals are the rhythms and traditions that give us a sense of stability in the face of uncertainty by reminding us that there's always something we can do, say, or make that conjures awe, contentment, and gratitude. They give us a way to acknowledge through our actions that, as life changes, we too must change.” I put Schildrecht’s idea forward here because the New Moon is squaring Mars next to a fixed T-Square among Venus-Uranus-Saturn, so the resistance to small change is evident and so is the urgency, given the times we’re living in. This New Moon in Virgo thereby is asking for your intentions on the small, simple steps you can take in routine and ritual that inspire you to thoughtfully adapt into the changes that the Universe has provided.
