The last new moon of 2023 arrives with the end of year Sagittarius flair that this season usually encompasses, each year with its own flavour.

 

It exacts around 8 hours before Mercury turns retrograde, which propels us into a new overview position; reviewing, reevaluating, reprioritising and revisiting our journey over the last few months or year with new perspective and wisdom.

 

The power of Sagittarius season and Mercury being in Capricorn allows us to access big picture vision, organise our thoughts and ideas, and then lay the foundations and structure to build on them with some actionable steps.

 

This is a powerful time of year to reflect and reimagine. Create a balance of space for doing so, as well as enjoying each moment and connecting with loved ones. And rather than starting something new this is a great time for tying up loose ends so there is fresh space for a whole new level of adventure.

 

The Sagittarius new moon enthusiatically reminds us of where we need to bring in more optimism that might not have been available to us in the past. Looking at something with a different lens can be incredibly healing, and pairing with Mercury retrograde the heavens are calling us to do so. With Mars closely on this lunation's tail, be aware of aggression and anger guiding our decisions and interactions. Take space and zoom out for better results.

 

Use your inner wisdom, vision, imagination and invest thoughtfulness to take aim for new direction, this is the gift of the Centaur.

Actively thinking about “hope” in December is one of my favorite Astrological traditions. When the Sun enters optimistic, faithful, and possibility-seeking Sagittarius we contemplate “hope” at the end of the year. Though not the end of the Astrological year, December inspires me to remember that while it’s the eleventh hour it’s not exactly midnight yet. Hopefully, in this eleventh hour we’re sharing together, supported by Sagittarius, and especially in the current complexities, we can put our best ideas forward to help us find more understanding. 

 

But first, let’s acknowledge that “hope” has made a fool out of so many of us. It can feel safer to think of hope as anti-intellectual. So instead we wrap ourselves in protective armor; living in the wreckage of the future so we can see danger coming and hope won’t make a fool out of us, again. After surviving and perhaps currently enduring one collective trauma, one moral injury after the next, can you blame us? Of course not. To set the stage for saying hello to hope again, I want to first share that Jane Goodall frames hope as a survival skill. A survival skill that enables us to cope in the face of adversity. 

 

For the purpose of this horoscope, I want to build on hope from the ideas of philosopher Maimonides when he said, “Hope is the belief in the plausibility of the possible…as opposed to the necessity of the probable.” With Mars in Sagittarius, the plausibility of the possible is critically important. I think we can often struggle with the plausibility of the possible when we’re surrounded by popular cynicism, criticism, and contempt. The plausibility of the possible isn’t popular. 

 

Psychologist Julia Samuel argues, “Hope is a feeling, but it’s also a plan.” The day after the New Moon in Sagittarius, Mercury turns retrograde in Capricorn. With this in mind, we’re asked to consider - if solutions are our approach, what’s the strategy to identify and implement them? Jupiter, currently finishing its retrograde, will trine Mercury which will further this question – what’s the plan for hope? What I found fascinating about the semantics of hope is that currently it's considered a want or wish. Which makes sense. The ancients believed hope was closely linked to truth and that hope has an aspect of faith too. Venus in trust-seeking Scorpio, opposite Jupiter in faithful Taurus, at the time of this New Moon is truly the most supportive transit to help us plan out trust and faith while feeling and planning hope. 

 

When it comes to hope, we need to remember that our spiritual practice helps us develop faith AND trust. If you’re feeling hopeless – which is normal – I gently encourage you to return to your spiritual practice and/or begin initiating one with the questions to the Universe that A Course in Miracles asks us to ask, “Where would you have me go? What would you have me do? What would you have me say? And to whom?” From there, you begin accessing a plan that comes from a higher intelligence which will guide you to the situations and relationships where you can be most useful and healing. May the New Moon in Sagittarius inspire you to say hello to hope to once more.
