Welcome to 2024 and a new moon in Capricorn to support us in reviewing or setting some new goals and desires.
 
This is just one moment, like any new moon to set intentions, but being under the guidance of Capricorn, and at the beginning of a year, we do have a transformative opportunity to get clear on a few important things.
 
Structurally, how do you envision things unfolding? Capricorn rules the bones and the skeletal system. Imagine what the 'spine' of the next few months to a year might stack up like. If it helps, what does your life look like in 2, 5 or even 10 years? Zooming out like this creates context for the building blocks of your reality, it also pulls things into perspective. We all die.
 
Seasonally this might not feel like the right time to start anything new (its not about actioning or forcing results right now), which is completely warranted if you are in deep winter, a great and potent time for deep reflection and integration. But under the Capricorn new moon you might have a few ideas or ways of reorganising things that may come up if you create the space for them to arise, wherever you reside and whatever season you are in. Write them down, this will help the future version of yourself.
 
You do not have to have the full picture knowing 'how' everything will unfold, or set intentions for ALL of the goals you want to achieve this year, or for your entire life, thats not how it works for a lot of people. But this new moon is a great starting point with access to depth and past/future culmination point, to pull focus with brave leaps of faith. I call it practical dreaming.
 
My personal process during Capricorn season is to keep a journal close by as I reflect on my life, feeling into what my new desires are, how I want to alter or restructure anything that hasn't felt right, recording anything that is peaking my curiosity that I want to explore further, and anything else that randomly comes up while I'm in the shower or driving. And I dump it all into one completely random list that grows over a few weeks/month.
 
I come back to this list when it feels right to organise it into categories, and I add it to my own yearly planner. During this process I whittle it all down into the five most important things that I feel the strongest in my body and heart, and are of utmost importance and a complete non-negotiable. These are the golden eggs, the ones that will be my main focus of nurturing throughout the year. They keep the course until they hatch, or fall away when its time for review (Mercury retrogrades are a great time for this, also cardinal points throughout the year).
 
This is not a one new moon, or a one moment process, it happens over time, like anything deep and good. I choose Capricorn because it makes the most logical sense to me (Mercury in Capricorn here) AND it is the beginning of another year which is a powerful and collective modern day reset point.
 
It is also not the only way, you have to find what works for you, and that comes by listening to your own inner wisdom and trusting the process. However, there are tools that can help, like the Astro Planner, which I created it to support this process inline with what is happening in the sky.
 
Most importantly, create the space to listen to your own deep wisdom, and connect with the earth.

Ready, set - climb! The annual New Moon in Capricorn calls forth a reimagining of all things Seagoat. Every New Moon is a chance to see the sign’s instructive nature from a new vantage point. How do we see Capricorn differently? First we want to remember that Capricorn is a Seagoat; a mythical creature which embodies the fusion of a goat's upper body capable of mountain climbing, and a fish's lower half enabling it to swim. So Capricorn symbolizes not only the agility to ascend mountains but also the adaptability to navigate through water with its fish-like tail. So often we see Capricorn coverage on its goat half; giving this sign its ambition, practicality, and grit. Rarely do we see Capricorn coverage integrating its earth and water character. So remember, pin the fishtail back to the Seagoat. Know that this New Moon helps us see this sign as that mountain climbs and deep dives. This both/and technique unique to Capricorn shows us the winning strategy of the sign that helps us accomplish our goals.

When there’s a prominent Capricorn transit like the annual New Moon in its honor, I do think we realize there’s a mountain we need to climb and Capricorn can show us to scale it one step at a time. My colleague Dawn Harrison helped me see Capricorn transits in this way when she asked me, “What’s your mountain, Colin?” So I’ll ask you the same question. What’s your mountain, reader? Is it cutting a bad habit? Is it repairing a relationship? Is it starting a new business? Is it starting a new system of habits? There is something about the start of a new year aligning with Capricorn Season where we realize a mountain needs to be climbed. Let us think again about the earth-water integration technique that’s specific to the Seagoat and its correlation to mountain climbing. What you’ll want to bring to the New Moon is a willingness to move through and manage (earth) your emotions (water) responsibly (earth and water). That’s the winning strategy of Capricorn. They show up afraid and they don’t offload/self-protect. They know it’s hard and they approach their mountain climbing with discipline and focus. How can you approach your mountain climb with that same level of grit? What habits and strategies can you employ that help you manage and move through your emotions while you’re climbing?

If you’re willing to show the Universe your willingness to climb the mountain and take responsibility for the way you respond to emotions, you will be met with exciting and promising surprises. The New Moon is trine Uranus in Taurus and this supportive aspect offers us a breakthrough where we can potentially break a bad habit and build a new one while we’re climbing whatever the mountain is in our lives. Marcus Aruelias said, “The impediment to action advances action. What stand in the way becomes the way.” So you see the mountain – which may feel like an overwhelming obstacle blocking your way – actually IS the way. The obstacle is the way. Now you know what it takes to climb the mountain so your rise to the top starts now.
