Sun enters Aries
20th PDT 14:25 / 21st AEDT 8:20
Today the sun enters cardinal fire sign Aries, kicking off the new astrological year! We’ve emerged from the vague, limbo-like atmosphere of Pisces season, imbued with creative ideas, eager to make them manifest in the material world. Aries is known for its trailblazing disposition. It is the sign of the Ram, fearless, single-minded, undaunted by conquest or contest. Aries is the precept of “I AM” – it is the sign where we assert our individuality, where we carve out personality, where we set ourselves apart from others. Aries is the spirit of differentiation, as opposed to Pisces, which is the undifferentiated.
As we move through the zodiacal wheel, each sign has a motto. The motto of the succeeding sign, Taurus, is “I HAVE”. It is in Taurus where we discover that, as unique, differentiated people, we have needs. In Taurus we begin the process of accruing the materials necessary for our journey through the year. Subsequently, during Aries season, it is appropriate to say that we are somewhat under-resourced. We have so many plans, and we want to act on them all at once! We don’t “need” anything except for curiosity, courage, and a zest for life…or so we assume. Occasionally, this blinder’s-on view of reality allows us to blot out all distractions, pursuing our goals with laser-like focus. We simply don’t acknowledge the possibility of failure, and confidence, however premature, delivers a bulls-eye to our chosen target. Victory is achieved!
However, this is the more typical story as the sun transits Aries: We put our all into everything we do, we do twelve things at once, and we miscalculate how much energy we have for each pursuit. Decisions made in haste are repented at leisure. Inevitably, impulsive behavior leads to burnout.
Fortunately, we are all children during this season. Children exhaust themselves, crash, and then wake up ready to seize the day once more. In this terrain, we tend to bounce back as quickly as we tire. Passions flare and dwindle. Strategies are concepted and then abandoned. We slowly internalize that if we want lasting success, we’ll need more than enthusiasm; we’ll need direction. We’ll need supplies! However, all the fleeting interests, the tests and trials, that come with this season serve to aid us in the process of distilling our identity. What matters to us most, and why, becomes ever clearer to us while the sun is in Aries. By season’s end, “I AM” does more than announce our arrival; it declares our intent.
