Mercury Stations Direct
Mercury Stations Direct

Mercury stations direct in Capricorn today, following a three-week retrograde which ushered us into the new calendar year. If you’ve held off on setting resolutions – or at least kept them malleable – you’ll now understand why. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. It carries the energy of initiation and enjoys laying down foundations upon which to build a legacy. But Mercury retrograde brought some trickster energy into the picture, encouraging us to explore the hidden, underworld layers of our Capricorn criteria. A reassessment of our motivations relative to obligation, ambition, and tradition, were required as we stepped into 2023.
Now, because we were caught up in the zeal of the new year, culturally impelled to define the “new me” we were going to become, that might not have happened. Contracts, with ourselves or with others, were probably established during this time, even against our better judgement. This is the classic tale: assuming that we will avoid the pitfalls of a transit because we know, on an intellectual level, what’s happening in the skies.
As Mercury stations direct, we begin to see where we did not have all the information. Certainly not enough to make a choice that could impact the trajectory of the coming months. And in Capricorn, a sign where our word is our bond, deals that were struck in good faith might become complicated in practice. You know this. The other party likely knows this. Yet it may not be feasible to renege right away.
Mars, also just recently direct, is still sitting still on the degree of its station. And we have another two and a half weeks to go before Mercury clears its retrograde shadow. The best thing to do now – indeed the only thing we can do now – is wait. Slowly, momentum will begin to return, more information will filter down to us, conversations will become less confusing and Kafka-esque, and in a short time, we will have the clarity to determine which course to chart.
As always, Mercury retrograde has its medicine! If the next couple of weeks feel sticky – as in hours spent on the phone trying in vain to cancel a hastily-purchased gym membership, or backing out of a family obligation that you legitimately don’t have time to attend – remember this sensation of discomfort!
The cosmos is saying, “pay attention to this moment”. If you learn from it, you won’t have to do it again this year. Not in the same way at least. If you feel guilt for assenting to something off the cuff, keep that in mind. Not to punish yourself, but to appreciate how choice can protect us or become a prison. What was signed on to in the preceding weeks CAN be undone. In the future, it may not be so simple.
