Mercury enters Leo
10th PDT 21:11 / 11th AEST 14:11
Following a two-week passage in Cancer, messenger-planet Mercury enters fixed fire sign Leo. For the next 18 days, we can harness the lion’s confidence for the purposes of persuasive storytelling.
This may feel like a Mercury tale in two acts. In regal Leo, Mercury answers to the sun, and until July 22, the sun is swimming in Cancerian seas. So, while our mode of self-expression may be more theatrical and grand, the impetus behind our speech is to promote security, and cultivate bonds. Our thought processes, while imaginative and playful, are easily swayed by the power of memory, and memory will steer our conversations back to the past.
Given Mercury in Leo’s penchant for mimicry, we could find ourselves slipping into old accents, revisiting bygone hobbies, pastimes, or fads, or articulating nostalgia through a contemporary creative practice, such as music, film or finally writing that memoir.
Reinterpreting our history and empowering ourselves through poetic license can be central to our experience. We may wish to voice truths we could not when we were children, either because our family wasn’t receptive, or because we didn’t have the right words to convey ourselves intellectually or emotionally. In light of this, some roleplaying is to be expected, as we try on personas to communicate our vision in a way which demonstrates our uniqueness but doesn’t scare away our audience. It is not that we’re being inauthentic at this time, after all, we believe in the role we’re playing!
Yet, we should be mindful of this tendency for romantic exaggeration within our relationships, as this desire for others’ validation is temporary. Come July 23, the sun enters Leo, and our Mercurial mannerisms become decidedly more self-centered. This costume change sees us adopting a more authoritative, no-nonsense, take-me-or-leave communication style for Mercury’s second act.
Bonds that were formed by conversing about the past may dissolve entirely. Sweet nothings are traded for expectations of praise. We might suddenly decide that it is silly and maudlin to dredge up nostalgia, and that our experiences must be firmly anchored in the here and now. We risk coming off especially egotistical after this shift. In truth, our lives ARE all about us. We are correct to center ourselves in our own narrative. But that doesn’t mean others won’t take umbrage when we quit asking them about their day!
Fortunately, we only have five days of this mental tenor until Mercury enters Virgo. However, this is also when Mercury will align with Venus retrograde, so discussions might be spicy, and it’s advisable to be extra conscious of your delivery. If you have to sell yourself, the 23rd through the 28th is an excellent time to make pitches and command the podium. All that fire is perfect for generating interest and inspiring awe. It is less ideal for bedside manner or relating with empathy.
