Since this Solar Eclipse is ruled by Mercury, and the messenger planet loves to ask questions, I’m curious to know; are you living beyond human scale? Is it possible that you’re organizing your personal expectations beyond human capacity? I started to wonder whether or not we’re organizing our behavior beyond human scale when I was getting teased a bit from my loved ones for my inability to multitask.

Now I’ll admit that it does take me a moment to truly context switch, but I also know that none of us are built to juggle twelve tabs of decision-making, five calendars (not including your partner’s if you have one) and communication flying in from Zoom, WhatsApp, Instagram, email and God only knows what else, all while trying to be well-rested, well-fed, well-moved and well-connected. So could we do what Virgo does best and zoom in just a bit to see how completely beyond human scale this all is? The most troubling part isn’t just how normalized all this alleged 'multitasking' has become, it’s how immediacy is expected across every channel, all the time. Add another covert problem here, which is that the immediacy is expected from the people not in front of you. So how is it within human scale to be hyperconnected in the digital world and well-connected in the physical world? I don’t think we have enough of two of our most precious renewable resources: time and attention, to do it all.

The sheer velocity of life is enough to destabilize us, and I’m holding this Solar Eclipse in Virgo as an opportunity to do what the mutable earth sign inspires us all to do: scale down, big time. Something as controversial as removing all text notifications from my phone, deleting apps which steal my time or embedding some unstructured time in my life to simply be present with what is. You probably wouldn’t necessarily pinpoint 'unstructured time' as a Virgo ruled idea but the Eclipse Chart has something very curious. The Solar Eclipse is almost exactly opposed to Saturn in Pisces, which could give us the architecture for unstructured time. Where Virgo helps us schedule it, Pisces helps us experience it. When we make room for solitude, rest, reflection or prayer without an optimization or outcome in mind, we make space for the ineffable. We let time expand around us, rather than trying to seek control over it. Said in a different way, we’re called 'human beings' not 'human doings' for a reason: we need to remember NOT to do, but to simply uncomfortably be.

I wonder if that’s how we begin living within human scale again. We stop organizing our attention around the speed of inhuman machines and algorithms, and start organizing around the natural cycles of our bodies and hearts. We re-learn what it means to move slowly, to listen deeply, to stop multitasking long enough to notice how frayed we’ve become. We make fewer promises and keep the ones we’ve committed to. We reclaim our attention as something sacred, tender and nonrenewable. The Eclipse invites us to do less with more intention and recover the space where life can actually be lived.

Aries
