What is the Scorpio shadow? Since we’re talking about a sign that likes to get right to the point, let’s dive in. The 'shadow,' most closely associated with Carl Jung’s work, refers to the unconscious, repressed parts of our personality — traits or desires that conflict with our self-image or societal expectations. While Jung’s definition is widely accepted, other psychological frameworks interpret similar unconscious processes in different ways.

When I view the shadow through a Scorpio lens, I think about how we speak to ourselves and behave in moments of fear, loneliness, anger, jealousy or control. How do we talk to ourselves when these emotions arise and what do we do in the name of them? While Scorpio doesn’t own these emotions, it does compel us to tell the truth about who we are when we’re not being politically correct, perfect or people-pleasing. Referring back to Jung’s ideas on the shadow, these are the parts of ourselves we repress or deny because they don’t align with our self-image or societal expectations. By now, we should recognize that we — and the people we love — are all capable of doing scary things when we’re scared.

This is where Scorpio’s self-talk comes in. One of the most practical and powerful uses of understanding self-talk is distinguishing between guilt and shame. Shame’s self-talk sounds like, “I’m a jealous person and therefore I’m unworthy of connection.” Guilt’s self-talk sounds like, “I want to control the situation, so let me calm down before I take it out on someone I love.” Shame makes you believe your character is unworthy. Guilt prompts you to reflect on where your behavior needs modification. Shame is often linked to negative outcomes like addiction, violence and depression because it makes people feel fundamentally flawed. In contrast, guilt tends to lead to positive behavior changes and healthier relationships by focusing on specific actions and encouraging accountability.

Under the New Moon in Scorpio, think about how you talk to yourself when you’re in shadow and struggle. Let guilt guide you toward new choices and behaviors and when you feel shame, reach out to someone you trust. Shame doesn’t like being named or spoken, so wrap language around it — thanks to Mercury in Scorpio opposing Uranus in Taurus — and see how you get back on your feet by expressing your self-talk out loud. This New Moon offers compassion, empathy and attunement, supported by the Grand Water Trine with Mars, Mercury and Neptune. It gives us the chance to bring light to our shadow through connection, empathy, and the relief of realizing, 'I’m not alone.' It’s valid to be imperfect and scared of being hurt again, but Scorpio’s truth is that it’s our responsibility to confront and correct these fears with connection. We start by changing our self-talk in ways that foster connection, not isolation.

So as you move forward, remember that Scorpio’s shadow isn’t something to fear, but something to work with. By acknowledging our emotions and being honest about our struggles, we give ourselves permission to heal, to grow and to form deeper connections – not just with our scared shadow – but with the best of ourselves and others.


 

Aries
