Nobody knows your heart except you. Nobody defines you but you. The primary message of the New Moon in Leo is this: only you have the honor to define and declare who you are. It’s a bold action that doesn't necessarily require confidence but demands concrete, credible and consistent choices. These choices allow you to acknowledge fear while still defining and asserting who you are.

One of my favorite aspects of counseling astrology is noticing patterns and developing interpretations around them. I’m observing that my clients are growing tired of others defining who they are. From family and romantic partners to strangers on the internet, my clients feel the need to liberate themselves from others’ limiting perceptions. This is an invitation from Leo. Leo reminds each of us that nobody has the right to define us—only we do. Then, we need the courage to declare, “I am…” From there, we are asked to live this declaration in concrete, credible and consistent ways. When we do, we start to experience what the New Moon reflection teaches us: radiating confidence attracts new opportunities and our hearts feel abundant with hope, optimism and excitement for all the new ways we can live into who we are.

We often miss the mark when it comes to the fullest analysis of Leo. It’s not about attention-seeking or grandiosity; it’s a call to courage, which originally meant telling the story of who you are with your whole heart. There’s a reason why the brightest star in the Leo constellation is the Lion’s heart—Regulus—because we shine the brightest when we own our story, define who we are and tell the story of our whole heart to the people who need to hear it the most. This act of courage never goes unrewarded. That is why Anaïs Nin said, “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." When we practice courage, we radiate confidence because it’s the reward of courage; confidence is not typically the requisite.

This act of courage has the potential to change the quality of our relationships, thanks to the Venus-Uranus square. We can ask ourselves, “Have I decided this person is X when they’re trying to tell me they’re Y?” It could also inspire a heated but necessary exchange with Mars conjunct Jupiter in Gemini, highlighting that conflict can be a bridge to closeness depending on how we navigate personality differences. An out-of-sign conjunction between Mercury in Virgo turning retrograde tomorrow and Venus in the last degree of Leo could inspire us to get very granular about courage’s next steps—the clear, consistent and credible ways that help us live into who we say we are. First, we bravely profess our new identities; then, we begin practicing and implementing these identities through behaviors for integrity’s sake. There’s a lot at risk in taking ownership of our self-declaration, but there’s a bigger risk in letting others label and frame you. So follow the Lion’s lead. Have courage in standing your sacred ground and tell the story of who you are with your whole heart.
